Harry Brandt

The Harry Brandt Project: Where Fiction Meets the Raw Reality

On stage, there is only glamour, strobe lights, and fame. But behind the velvet curtain lies a different reality: an exhausting, relentless touring schedule that keeps musicians away from home for months on end. This isolation and longing for comfort is where Harry Brandt comes to life.

Harry Brandt is a fictitious character with a grand, welcoming house on Amsterdam’s iconic Herengracht. He acts as the ultimate host, inviting traveling artists to step off the road and into a warm, sanctuary-like home for one evening. Here, far away from the chaotic backstage areas and roaring crowds, their music finds a different resonance, unveiling the deeper meanings, personal struggles, and true stories behind their songs.

A Masterful Blend of Disciplines

The project is a unique playground where fiction, reality, documentary, theater, and music converge:

The Set (Theater & Fiction): While the studio was physically built inside a house on the Herengracht, the setting itself was a brilliant piece of theatrical fiction, featuring a meticulously crafted cardboard canal house that set a surreal, intimate mood.

The Stories (Documentary & Music): There are no scripts for the artists. The musicians share their raw, real-life personal stories and stripped-back songs, bringing absolute authenticity to Harry’s fictional world.

The Medium (Cinema): To capture the fleeting magic of these encounters, every session was filmed in real-time, captured in a single take on raw 35mm film.

The Harry Brandt project is more than a live session; it is a cinematic home away from home. It strips away the industry noise to capture the vulnerable, human heart of the artist, preserved forever on celluloid.
